OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Feature Collecting User Keystrokes, Raising Privacy Concerns
OpenAI has launched a new feature for ChatGPT's desktop application on macOS, named 'Computer History,' which tracks user clicks, keystrokes, and other interactions. This feature is designed to enable ChatGPT to learn from user activity on their computer, thereby fine-tuning its AI model. According to Ari Weinstein, an OpenAI product and engineering manager, 'Computer History' allows the AI to create a timeline of user actions, which it can then use to understand work patterns, complete tasks, and suggest automations. A demonstration by OpenAI's Dominik Kundel showed the AI recalling the last Google Doc viewed and checking Slack history for shared documents. OpenAI states the feature is opt-in, automatically ignores incognito mode content, and allows users to blacklist apps from tracking. Users can also view and remove data from the AI's 'memory.'
