Federal Grand Jury Indicts Utah Man for Hate Crime in Stabbing of Muslim Victim
A federal grand jury has indicted Peter Larsen, a 48-year-old man from Orem, Utah, on charges of committing a hate crime. The indictment follows an incident in mid-July where Larsen allegedly stabbed a Muslim man multiple times at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah. According to the Justice Department, Larsen targeted the victim because of his religion. The attack, which left the victim with severe injuries requiring surgeries, was reportedly motivated by Larsen's intent to harm Muslims. Witnesses intervened to stop the attack, and Larsen was subsequently detained by police. He has been in state custody since his arrest on July 13. The incident has heightened concerns among Muslim Americans about rising Islamophobia, a trend that has been noted by rights advocates over the past two decades.
