US Power Grids Strained by Heat Waves and Rising Energy Demand
Back-to-back heat waves across the United States are straining electricity grids as demand surges due to high temperatures and the growing energy needs of data centers and factories. Regional transmission operators (RTOs) like PJM Interconnection and the Southwest Power Pool have issued emergency alerts, highlighting concerns about grid reliability. Temperatures have reached 100°F (38°C) or higher in many areas, with humidity exacerbating the heat's impact. The strain is particularly evident in regions like Virginia's Data Center Alley, where AI facilities contribute to increased power usage. While some grids, like Texas's ERCOT, have added renewable energy capacity, others face challenges due to aging infrastructure and insufficient investment.
