France and Spain Struggle to Contain Wildfires Amid Heatwave Threat
France and Spain are battling extensive wildfires as they brace for an impending heatwave that threatens to exacerbate the situation. In France, particularly near Bordeaux, firefighters have been working to control a blaze that has already consumed 42,000 hectares and forced 220,000 people to evacuate. In Spain, fires west of Madrid have led to the evacuation of 60,000 residents. Both countries are experiencing one of the largest evacuation operations in Europe in recent decades. The European Union is assisting with satellite monitoring and deploying resources through its Civil Protection Mechanism. The heatwave is expected to bring temperatures up to 42C in Spain and 40C in France, increasing the risk of further fire spread.
