Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) Remains a Concern Post-COVID-19 Infection
A recent medical case highlighted the ongoing risk of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) following COVID-19 infection. A previously healthy 14-year-old male presented with fatigue, fevers, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain, initially suspected to be a middle ear infection. His condition worsened, leading to admission to a pediatric intensive care unit with symptoms including fever, increased heart rate, low blood pressure, elevated pancreatic enzymes, neck pain, limited neck motion, and reddening of the eyes. Further testing revealed elevated heart enzyme levels and high levels of C-reactive protein, indicating inflammation in multiple organ systems. Doctors diagnosed MIS-C, a rare but serious complication of COVID-19 that can occur 2-6 weeks after an initial infection, even asymptomatic ones.
