Pennsylvania's White Cliffs of Conoy Transform from Industrial Quarry to Scenic Riverfront Destination
The White Cliffs of Conoy, located 40 minutes from Harrisburg in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, have transitioned from a bustling 19th-century limestone and dolomite quarry into a scenic natural attraction with riverfront hiking trails. This site, once a key contributor to the steel production boom during World War I, saw its industrial operations cease by the 1950s. The J.E. Baker Company, which operated the quarry, went out of business, leading to the closure of the quarry pumps. This allowed the dig site to fill with water, creating the unique landscape now open to the public since 2018. The cliffs themselves are a byproduct of the dolomite mining operations, with waste materials dumped along the adjacent Susquehanna Riverfront. Despite their industrial origin, these formations offer visually striking views and opportunities for outdoor recreation.
