La Via Campesina Calls for Global Mobilization Against WTO and Free Trade Agreements
La Via Campesina, a global movement representing small-scale food producers, is organizing an International Day of Action against Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) on September 10, 2026. This mobilization aims to resist the ongoing project of neoliberalism, which they argue is enabled by a nexus between states, transnational corporations, and national elites. The movement is calling upon its member organizations and allies to mobilize against the WTO, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as against what they describe as the 'dystopian visions of tech overlords.' They plan to present alternative visions to their communities worldwide, emphasizing their struggle for Food Sovereignty as a pathway to a reimagined global trade system. This initiative follows the release of their alternative global trade framework during the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference in Cameroon, which seeks to reorganize global trade based on principles of food sovereignty.
