President Trump Expands ICE Arrests Through Local Partnerships, Increasing Immigration Enforcement
Under President Trump's administration, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has significantly increased immigration arrests by leveraging local law enforcement through section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This provision allows ICE to deputize local officers to perform federal immigration duties, such as serving detainers and making field arrests. The Department of Homeland Security reports that over 1,000 local partnerships have been signed, with a majority of these agreements granting expansive 'Task Force' authority, which includes roadside enforcement. Florida and Texas are leading in the number of these agreements, with Florida alone accounting for 42.4% of Task Force-level agencies. This strategy has been praised by some as a means to enhance public safety, while critics argue it turns local police into extensions of federal immigration enforcement, potentially eroding community trust.
