Indonesia Demands Social Media Platforms Report Account Closures for Users Under 16
Indonesia is pressing social media companies to disclose the number of accounts closed for users under 16, following the implementation of new regulations aimed at protecting minors from harmful online content. The regulation, which took effect at the end of March, prohibits children under 16 from accessing digital platforms that could expose them to risks such as pornography, cyberbullying, and online scams. Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid emphasized the need for transparency, urging platforms to report compliance figures publicly. TikTok has already deactivated 1.7 million accounts, while other platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram have committed to similar restrictions. However, Roblox has yet to comply. The regulation affects approximately 70 million young Indonesians, and the government allows platforms to choose their own methods for verifying user ages.
