President Trump Pressures Federal Reserve on Interest Rates, Threatens Trade Action
President Donald Trump is intensifying pressure on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates, suggesting he might halt trade with countries where the U.S. has a trade deficit if rates are not lowered. This threat was made in a Truth Social post following a stronger-than-expected jobs report. The U.S. recorded a $1.2 trillion trade deficit last year and currently has deficits with over 100 nations, including major partners like China, Mexico, and Canada. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh and other Fed officials have indicated a willingness to raise rates if inflation persists above the 2% target, despite presidential pressure. Warsh emphasized the need for clear and sufficiently fast movement of underlying inflation towards the Fed's objective. The central bank has maintained steady rates throughout the year, with inflation remaining elevated.
