National Memorial Arboretum Faces Backlash Over Proposed Name Change to Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens
The National Memorial Arboretum, a 61-hectare estate in Alrewas, Staffordshire, is set to undergo a rebranding later this year, changing its name to the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens. This change is part of a full integration with its parent charity, the Royal British Legion (RBL). The arboretum, which has been a significant site for remembrance since it opened 25 years ago, attracts over 300,000 visitors annually, including 26,000 young people on educational trips. The rebranding aims to reflect the site's evolution and its central role in the RBL's mission to support the armed forces community. However, the proposed name change has sparked opposition, with thousands signing a petition arguing that it undermines the site's rich heritage and emotional connections.
