UN Humanitarian Aid Coordinator Reduces 2026 Funding Appeal to $33 Billion Amid Declining Support
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced a reduction in its funding appeal for 2026 to $33 billion, following a significant drop in support this year, primarily from Western governments. This marks the lowest level of support in a decade, with the office receiving only $15 billion in 2025. The funding is intended to assist approximately 135 million people affected by conflicts, climate disasters, epidemics, and food shortages. Key areas of focus include $4.1 billion for Palestinian regions, $2.9 billion for Sudan, and $2.8 billion for a regional plan around Syria. OCHA Chief Tom Fletcher highlighted the severe impact of reduced funding, noting increased hunger, health system breakdowns, and the closure of aid programs, particularly those supporting women and girls.
