Lowy Institute Highlights Evolving China-Australia Relations Amid Strategic Tensions
The Lowy Institute has reported that China-Australia relations have reached a 'good enough' baseline, according to Graham Fletcher, a former Australian ambassador to China. Despite ongoing security frictions, the relationship has improved significantly since its fracture in 2017. Canberra remains cautiously optimistic about its resilience while being wary of Beijing's overtures. The report highlights that while annual meetings between leaders have resumed, and various trade measures have been resolved, the relationship is still susceptible to disruption due to conflicting strategic interests and values. The economic relationship remains substantial, with China as Australia's top trading partner, but growth is unlikely to be sustained due to shifting economic patterns.
