Alpine Meadows Ski Resort Implements New Avalanche Control System and Facility Upgrades
Alpine Meadows ski resort has installed five new Wyssen avalanche control towers, marking a significant change from their previous Gazex system. This upgrade aims to enhance safety and efficiency in snow release operations. The Wyssen system uses a tower to remotely drop solid explosive charges, which are reported to be more intense and capable of causing snow release over a wider area compared to the propane-based Gazex system. While the smaller Wyssen towers can be loaded with six explosive cartridges, requiring patrollers to climb them for reloading, larger versions exist that are reloaded by helicopter. Additionally, the resort has undertaken various summer projects, including extensive trail maintenance, particularly in the Lakeview area, focusing on clearing dead trees to improve navigability.
