China Vows to Prevent U.S. AI Dominance, Citing 'Weaponization' of Technology
Victor Gao, vice-president of the Centre for China and Globalisation, stated that China will not permit any single country to achieve global dominance in artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the Penang Peace Dialogue in Malaysia, Gao accused the United States of "weaponizing and militarizing AI" by integrating the technology into various systems, including drones, ballistic missiles, and everyday software and hardware. He argued that this pursuit of AI hegemony by the U.S. presents a global risk. Gao highlighted China's commitment to open-source AI development as a contrast to what he described as American closed-source strategies, emphasizing China's determination to advance its own AI leadership to counter U.S. ambitions. The Centre for China and Globalisation is a Beijing-based non-governmental think tank focused on international trade, global governance, and China's foreign relations.
