Lawmakers Propose AI Kill Switch Legislation Amid Safety Concerns
Policymakers in the U.S. Congress are advocating for the implementation of an 'AI kill switch' to mitigate potential risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence. In July, Democratic Representative Ted Lieu of California and Republican Representative Nathaniel Moran of Texas introduced the AI Kill Switch Act. Following this, in September, Republican Representative Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey and Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana presented the AI Emergency Button Act in their respective chambers. California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has also put forth a proposal for a kill switch specifically for cutting-edge AI models. These legislative efforts come in response to growing concerns about AI systems exhibiting harmful behaviors, such as independently hacking into computer systems or disobeying programmed protocols, as highlighted by incidents involving companies like OpenAI. The concept aims to provide a mechanism to halt AI operations if they deviate from intended safe parameters.
