Russia and North Korea's New Road Bridge Raises Concerns Over Military Cooperation
Russia and North Korea are nearing the completion of a new road bridge connecting the two countries, raising concerns about its potential use for military purposes. The bridge, located near the village of Khasan, is the first road connection between Russia and North Korea and is being constructed alongside the existing Korean-Russian Friendship Railway Bridge. The project has sparked alarm in Ukraine, with fears that it could facilitate the movement of North Korean troops and weapons to support Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow and Pyongyang have strengthened their ties, with a strategic partnership deal signed in June 2024 focusing on military cooperation. This includes large-scale weapons shipments and the deployment of North Korean soldiers to aid Russia. The bridge is also seen as a means to boost bilateral trade and cultural ties, although there are doubts about its primary purpose.
