Wildfires Rage Across Georgia and Florida Amid Extreme Drought Conditions
Wildfires are currently burning across southern Georgia and northeast Florida, driven by extreme drought conditions. According to USA Today, Georgia is experiencing moderate to exceptional drought across 98% of its land area, leading to an increase in wildfires above the state's five-year average. In Florida, 135 wildfires are affecting nearly 21,000 acres. The Georgia Forestry Commission has issued its first-ever mandatory burn ban, prohibiting outdoor burning of trash, yard debris, and agricultural materials. This ban covers regions below Atlanta, extending from Harris County to Columbia County, and is slated to remain in effect for at least 30 days. The Pineland Road fire in Clinch County, Georgia, has spread to nearly 9,000 acres and is only 10% contained.
