Taliban's Restrictions Deepen Crisis for Afghan Women, Blocking Education and Legal Rights
The Taliban have barred approximately 2.4 million Afghan girls from secondary education since regaining power in 2021, according to UNESCO. UN Women reports that the Taliban have issued over 100 decrees targeting women and girls, institutionalizing discrimination and creating a severe women's rights crisis. Afghanistan remains the only country banning girls from secondary education and women from university. The Taliban claim to respect women's rights per Islamic law, but recent decrees have weakened legal protections, abolished legal equality, and strengthened men's authority within marriage.
