Seattle City Council Proposes Legislation to Assist Vehicle Residents
The Seattle City Council is currently reviewing a legislative package aimed at providing assistance to individuals living in their vehicles. Proposed by Councilmember Dan Strauss, the 'Vehicle Resident Assistance Program' consists of six measures designed to connect these residents with shelter and housing. A key component of the proposal is the creation of designated 'safe lots' where vehicle residents can park and access services. Councilmember Strauss highlighted that currently, there are no dedicated city teams or safe lots focused on helping people living in cars, trailers, or RVs transition into stable housing. This situation often overloads existing outreach staff, who are left to manage hundreds of clients.
