European Commission Fines Elon Musk's Platform, Prompting Threats of Retaliation
The European Commission has imposed a €120 million fine on Elon Musk's platform, X, for breaching transparency obligations under the EU’s Digital Services Act. This act is a key content moderation law in the EU, and the fine marks the conclusion of the first part of the EU's investigation into X. The Commission criticized X for its deceptive blue checkmark feature, which was changed from a verification mark to a paid feature, and for its lack of transparency in its advertising library. Additionally, X has been accused of failing to provide public data access for researchers. The fine is directed at the entire corporate structure of X, including X Holdings Companies, xAI, and Elon Musk himself. In response, Musk has threatened to retaliate against the individuals responsible for the fine, suggesting that the EU should be abolished.
