James Talarico Leads in Texas Senate Polls, Signaling Stronger Democratic Position
James Talarico, a state lawmaker and Presbyterian seminarian, is currently polling ahead of Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race. According to RealClearPolling averages, Talarico leads Paxton by 1.5 points, with 44.3% to Paxton's 42.8%, based on surveys conducted from January to early May. This development suggests that Democrats may be entering the 2026 contest on stronger footing compared to previous years. The race is expected to test whether Democrats can break through in a state they have not carried for statewide office this century. Political scientist Larry Sabato notes that Talarico has a better chance than any Democrat since the 1990s, drawing comparisons to Beto O'Rourke's 2018 campaign against Republican Senator Ted Cruz.
