Save the Children Reports Worsening Conditions for Afghan Women and Girls Amidst Restrictions and Economic Hardship
Save the Children has reported a significant deterioration in the conditions faced by women and girls in Afghanistan. The organization, which has been active in the country since 1976, highlights increasing restrictions, widespread poverty, and limited access to education and essential services. This crisis is attributed to years of conflict, economic struggles, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a growing hunger crisis. Since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, restrictions on women and girls have intensified, severely limiting their access to education and employment opportunities. The healthcare system is also struggling, leaving pregnant women, new mothers, and newborns with inadequate medical care. Save the Children estimates that two babies are born every minute in Afghanistan, with hundreds of thousands of infants and mothers facing difficulties in accessing health services.
