Iran and Oman Discuss Strait of Hormuz Navigation Amid Security Concerns
Iran and Oman have engaged in discussions regarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage. The talks, confirmed by Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, involved several rounds of negotiations between deputy ministers of Foreign Affairs in Tehran. Oman has proposed the creation of a regional consortium to oversee maritime security, search-and-rescue operations, and other cooperative efforts. This proposal suggests voluntary participation and payments, which Iran has opposed, advocating instead for mandatory payments to ensure vessel transit through the strait. The discussions aim to establish common principles and operational mechanisms for safe shipping traffic while respecting the sovereign rights of both coastal states.
