Canada and U.S. in Talks to Avoid 50% Tariff on Canadian Exports
Canada and the United States are engaged in negotiations to prevent a new 50% U.S. tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports, set to take effect on August 19. The proposed tariffs would impact a wide range of goods, including motor vehicles, alcohol, dairy, electronics, and building materials. The Canadian government is reportedly considering concessions, such as lifting provincial bans on American alcohol and adjusting dairy import quotas, in exchange for the U.S. dropping the tariffs and easing duties on steel and aluminum. These discussions are ongoing, with both sides exchanging written positions but not yet reaching an agreement.
