Penguin Random House India Drops Sonia Gandhi Memoir Amid Editorial Disputes
Penguin Random House India has terminated its publishing agreement for Sonia Gandhi’s upcoming memoir, 'Belonging,' following two months of disagreements over proposed editorial changes. The publisher’s lawyers reportedly raised objections to specific passages in several chapters, which included references to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the RSS, communal riots, minorities, and contemporary events such as the Galwan standoff. Sonia Gandhi’s team contended that the suggested edits were excessive and could lead to discrepancies between the global and Indian editions of the book. While initial discussions were described as cordial, they later became difficult. Penguin Random House India stated that the decision was not influenced by external pressure, attributing the breakdown to a specific point of disagreement. Ultimately, the author’s team decided not to proceed with the publication, a decision the publisher respected.
