U.S. House Passes Bill to Halt Nigeria Aid Over Christian Killings, Pressuring Nigerian Government
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to withhold 100% of U.S. aid to Nigeria until the Nigerian government takes effective steps to prevent and respond to violence against Christians. Sponsored by Rep. Riley Moore, the legislation is part of the Fiscal Year 2027 National Security, Department of State and Related Programs Appropriations Act. The bill, which still requires Senate approval and President Trump's signature, aims to pressure President Bola Tinubu's government to improve security in regions where Christian communities have been attacked. An amendment by Rep. Greg Steube increased the withholding from 50% to 100% until the U.S. Secretary of State certifies Nigeria's effective action in protecting Christians. The legislation reflects a broader shift in Washington's approach under the Trump administration, tying foreign assistance to religious freedom concerns.
