Congresswoman Kim Schrier Advocates for Children's Online Safety Amid Social Media Concerns
Congresswoman Kim Schrier, the first pediatrician in Congress, is actively working to enhance children's online safety. She has introduced several legislative measures, including Sammy’s Law, which mandates social media companies to collaborate with third-party watchdog apps to alert parents about harmful online interactions involving their children. Additionally, Schrier has proposed the Kids Off Social Media Act, aiming to prohibit children under 13 from using social media and to restrict companies from recommending content to users under 17 through algorithms. Recently, Schrier participated in a roundtable discussion with healthcare leaders and patients in Seattle to address the impacts of social media on youth mental health. The discussion included representatives from Seattle Children’s Hospital and Stanford’s Social Media Lab, focusing on policy solutions to protect children and hold Big Tech accountable.
