ICE Detains Army Sergeant's Wife in Texas Amid Policy Shift on Military Family Immigration
The wife of a U.S. Army sergeant, Deisy Rivera Ortega, is currently detained at an immigration facility in El Paso, Texas. This incident occurs as the Trump administration appears to be reducing leniency towards immigrant family members of military personnel. Jose Serrano, an active duty soldier who has served three tours in Afghanistan, reported that his wife was arrested on April 14 during an immigration services appointment aimed at advancing her permanent residency application. Rivera Ortega, originally from El Salvador, is challenging her detention in U.S. District Court and seeking to prevent her deportation to Mexico, a country with which she has no ties. Despite holding a valid work permit and previously being granted a withholding of removal to El Salvador, the Department of Homeland Security stated that Rivera Ortega entered the U.S. illegally in 2016 and is subject to a final removal order issued in December 2019.
