Texas Legislature Reconsiders Social Media's Impact on Youth Mental Health and Parental Rights
The Texas House Committee on Public Health recently convened to discuss the impact of social media platforms and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies on the mental health, cognitive development, and behavioral well-being of minors in Texas. This interim work precedes the 90th Legislative Session in January 2027. Testimony during the hearing highlighted concerns such as depression, anxiety, cyberbullying, exploitation, and the addictive design of social media platforms, including algorithms, notifications, and endless scrolling features. Witnesses also described instances of children encountering content related to suicide and self-harm. However, the committee also heard arguments that social media can foster meaningful connections and communities for young people who might otherwise feel isolated.
