Germany Urges U.S. Participation in Ukraine Peace Talks Amid Security Concerns
Germany has called on the United States to join peace talks concerning Ukraine, as European leaders express concerns over the direction of U.S.-backed proposals. Friedrich Merz, a key German political figure, emphasized the importance of including European security interests in any peace agreement. The discussions are centered around potential territorial concessions by Ukraine, which are part of a European proposal recently sent to Washington. The call for U.S. involvement follows a tense conversation between Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British leader Keir Starmer, and President Trump, highlighting disagreements over the peace process. European leaders are worried that the current U.S. proposals may favor Russia and impose demands on Ukraine that President Zelenskyy might find unacceptable. Merz stressed that any ceasefire must be supported by strong guarantees to prevent further Russian aggression.
