Mercy Corps CEO Calls for 'Fresh Look' at UN and Laws of War Amid Global Conflicts
Tjada McKenna, CEO of the U.S.-based humanitarian organization Mercy Corps, has called for a 'fresh look' at the United Nations system and the laws of war. Speaking to The National, McKenna highlighted the surge in Middle East conflicts, rising global hunger, and unpunished breaches of international humanitarian law as reasons for this urgent re-evaluation. She noted that international humanitarian law, designed to protect civilians, medics, and aid workers, has been disregarded in numerous conflicts worldwide, making the past year one of the deadliest for aid workers, particularly in Gaza. McKenna criticized the UN Security Council's structure, which has remained largely unchanged for 80 years and grants veto power to five countries, reflecting the victors of the Second World War. She emphasized that these systems are being 'tested and violated' and stressed the need for new approaches and accountability.
