Nearly 1,400 Doctors Depart Israel Since 2023 Amid Judicial Overhaul and Gaza War
A new study from Tel Aviv University reveals that at least 1,370 physicians have left Israel between 2023 and 2025. This figure is nearly double the number of doctors who emigrated during the preceding decade. The study, conducted by Prof. Itai Ater, Prof. Nittai K. Bergman, and Doron Zamir, attributes this exodus to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's judicial overhaul and the subsequent impact of the Gaza War. The researchers defined an emigrant physician as someone who spent over 270 days outside Israel in the first year after departure and has not spent more than three consecutive months in the country since. After accounting for returnees and excluding recent immigrants, the study found an average annual loss of 255 physicians, five times the average of the previous decade. A concerning trend is the emigration of older, experienced physicians, with one in five emigrants aged 45 or older, compared to one in seven previously.
