GPS Jamming Becomes Daily Challenge for European Airlines, Prompting New Pilot Training
GPS jamming has emerged as a persistent and escalating issue for airlines operating over Eastern Europe, particularly in the Baltic Sea region. Finnair, a major European carrier, has reported that GPS interference has become an 'everyday problem' for its pilots, leading the airline to suspend flights to Tartu, Estonia, in 2024 due to safety concerns related to landing approaches. The intensity of these disruptions has significantly increased since the beginning of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. The Polish Institute of Telecommunications noted that GPS and other satellite navigation system disruptions were recorded almost daily along the Polish Baltic coast during the summer.
