Public Health Officials Warn of Ebola, Mpox, and Vibrio Risks Amid Summer Travel
As the summer travel season approaches, public health officials are closely monitoring several emerging health threats that could impact travelers. A significant Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, driven by the Bundibugyo strain, has resulted in 900 suspected cases and 220 deaths. Former CDC Director Robert Redfield has warned that this outbreak could become the second largest in history. In the U.S., Boston is experiencing a localized surge in mpox cases, with 77 reported between August 2025 and March 2026, despite a national decline. Additionally, Florida has reported five cases of Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria, linked to warm coastal waters. These developments highlight the potential for localized outbreaks to intersect with peak travel patterns, posing risks to travelers both domestically and internationally.
