Myanmar Announces Amnesty for Over 4,000 Prisoners Amid Ongoing Civil Conflict
Myanmar's new President, Min Aung Hlaing, has announced an amnesty for 4,335 prisoners, marking the third such move in six months. This decision, reported by state television, is part of a tradition of granting amnesties during significant national holidays. The amnesty includes 179 foreigners who will be deported, and it also involves the commutation of death sentences to life imprisonment and reductions in other sentences. The move comes amid ongoing civil unrest following the military coup in 2021, which led to the detention of over 30,000 individuals on political charges.
