Rwanda Engages in Talks with European Nations on Migrant Reception Amid Policy Shifts
Rwanda is in preliminary discussions with several European countries regarding a potential agreement to host migrants. This initiative is part of a broader emergency transit mechanism that would provide migrants with a safe place before they either return to their home countries or seek asylum elsewhere. The talks come as the European Union tightens its migration policies, allowing member states to establish return centers outside EU territory. Rwanda has prior experience in such agreements, having previously signed a deal with the UK to accept migrants who entered Britain through illegal routes. However, this agreement was canceled by the new Labour government under Keir Starmer, leading to Rwanda's unsuccessful legal claim for compensation.
