Nobel-Winning Chemist Criticizes U.S. Visa Policies, Relocates to China
Nobel Prize-winning chemist Omar Yaghi has criticized the increasingly restrictive visa policies in the United States, arguing that they undermine international scientific collaboration. Yaghi, who shared the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, is leaving the University of California, Berkeley, to join Tsinghua University in Beijing. His decision comes amid growing uncertainty in the U.S. research environment, exacerbated by the Trump administration's proposed changes to federal research funding and restrictions on collaborations with Chinese universities. Yaghi expressed concerns that current U.S. policies are making it harder for scientists to collaborate across borders, creating frustration and uncertainty among young scientists. He emphasized the need for easing visa restrictions and greater investment in international research partnerships.
