Mississippi Lawmakers Propose Eliminating Sales Tax on Agriculture Equipment to Aid Farmers
Mississippi lawmakers are considering a bill, SB 2272, aimed at eliminating the 1.5 percent sales tax on agricultural equipment to provide financial relief to commercial farmers. Authored by State Senator Neil Whaley, the bill targets farmers in the poultry, livestock, fishing, crops, and ornamental plants industries, as well as those in logging, pulpwood, and tree-farming. The proposed legislation would exempt taxes on farm implements like tractors and cover parts and labor for maintenance and repairs. The Mississippi Department of Revenue would be tasked with creating an application process for farmers to obtain permits for these exemptions. The bill has already passed the Senate with overwhelming support, receiving praise from state leaders and the agricultural community.
