Congressman Steny Hoyer Advocates for Ukraine Sanctions Amidst House Uncertainty
U.S. Congressman Steny Hoyer of Maryland is urging his colleagues in Congress to pass a significant Russian sanctions package, emphasizing the importance of sending a clear message of support to Ukraine. This push comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly appealed to U.S. lawmakers for the legislation. The Senate has already advanced the 'Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia Act' with an 86-11 vote, following Zelenskyy's rare appearance in the chamber. However, the bill's future in the House is uncertain due to Speaker Mike Johnson's Republican majority, which is reportedly reluctant to engage in overseas affairs, and concerns from some Democrats regarding the bill's broad tariff powers for President Trump. Hoyer, a former Democratic leader, believes that Congress and the courts will provide necessary checks on presidential authority.
