ICE Confirms Death of Salvadoran Man in New Jersey Detention Facility, Sparking Concerns
A Salvadoran man, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, aged 41, has died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Delaney Hall detention facility in New Jersey. This marks the second death at the facility within a year. Lopez-Cornejo experienced a medical emergency and was transported to a Newark hospital, where he passed away. ICE records indicate that Lopez-Cornejo was initially detained and deported in 2006 after entering the U.S. without authorization. He re-entered the country later and was detained again in June 2026. His family reports that he suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure, and seizures, and was allegedly denied medication while in detention. ICE maintains that detainees receive medical screenings and have access to emergency treatment. The cause of death has not been officially determined.
