MSJ Art Design Students Explore Frank Duveneck's Cincinnati Legacy Through Experiential Learning
Mount St. Joseph University (MSJ) Art & Design students recently participated in an experiential learning program to trace the life and work of American artist Frank Duveneck. This initiative, supported by a Germany on Campus grant from the German Embassy, allowed students to explore Duveneck's German heritage and artistic education by visiting significant locations in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky connected to his life. Instead of solely relying on textbooks, students visited Duveneck's childhood home and studio in Covington, Kentucky, and saw his artwork in Mother of God Church and the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. They also visited his gravesite at Mother of God Cemetery and studied his works at the Cincinnati Art Museum. This immersive approach provided students with a firsthand understanding of how artists, institutions, and communities contribute to a city's cultural history.
