Psychiatric Patients Face Extended ER Waits for Hospital Admission
Data reveals that psychiatric patients in Canada often experience prolonged waits in emergency rooms for hospital admission. In Alberta, patients waited an average of 33 hours for a psychiatric bed, significantly longer than other patients. Similar trends are observed in Quebec and British Columbia. Experts attribute these delays to systemic underfunding and increased demand for mental health services. The chaotic ER environment can exacerbate patients' conditions, leading to longer hospital stays. Efforts to address these issues include increasing bed capacity and improving community mental health services.
