SAE International Issues Best Practices for Training Robotaxi Remote Operators
SAE International's Autonomous Vehicle Safety Consortium has published new best practices for training and managing remote operators of autonomous vehicles (AVs). The document, titled 'Best Practice for ADS Remote Assistance Training and Human Factors,' provides recommendations for companies operating Level 4 and Level 5 autonomous vehicles, such as robotaxis. These guidelines aim to establish a curriculum for remote operators and create an optimal working environment for them. The core idea is that while these operators don't 'drive' in the traditional sense, they are crucial for monitoring deployed vehicles and assisting them when the AV system encounters unclear situations, like choosing the correct lane or confirming a suggested path. The consortium emphasizes that operators need a comprehensive understanding of the autonomous driving system, its sensors, decision-making processes, and local traffic regulations, even if they are not physically present in the vehicle or even on the same continent.
