Independence, Kentucky, Removes Flock Cameras Amidst Privacy Concerns
Independence, Kentucky, has announced the immediate removal of Flock cameras, which are automated license plate readers. Mayor Chris Reinersman stated that the decision was made in response to significant opposition from Independence residents regarding the use of these surveillance tools. While Mayor Reinersman personally believes Flock cameras are an effective safety tool, he emphasized the importance of serving the residents' wishes. The city had invested over $100,000 to install 17 Flock cameras, which were rented and will now be returned to the company. Independence is the second Northern Kentucky city, following Fort Mitchell, to discontinue the use of these license plate readers. Other cities in the Tri-State area, such as Newport in Northern Kentucky and Oxford in Butler County, have also ended their use of Flock cameras.
