Cincinnati Experiences Rare Derecho Storm Amid Wet Summer
Greater Cincinnati experienced a rare meteorological event on August 11, 2026, when a powerful derecho storm swept through the region. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a derecho is a fast-moving line of thunderstorms with destructive straight-line winds, sometimes reaching speeds of up to 130 mph. This storm marked the first derecho in the area since June 2012. The summer has also been notably wet, with Cincinnati recording 15.04 inches of rainfall since June 1, slightly below last year's summer total of 15.23 inches. August alone saw 3.73 inches of rain, higher than the 2.52 inches recorded in August 2025. Meteorologists attribute the wet pattern to a ridge of high pressure feeding moisture into the Ohio Valley and a trough over southeast Canada steering storm systems into the region.
