Cincinnati Public Schools Board Replaces Earned Income Tax Levy with Property Tax Levy Amid Financial Struggles
The Cincinnati Public Schools Board of Education has decided to withdraw an earned income tax levy from the November ballot, opting instead for a property tax levy. This decision follows significant public opposition to the initial proposal of a 0.75% earned income tax levy, which would have cost residents with $50,000 in annual income approximately $375 per year. The board voted 6-1 to rescind the income tax levy and 5-1 to approve the property tax levy, with one member abstaining. The property tax levy, set at seven mills, will be voted on in November and is expected to generate about $66 million annually if approved. This move comes as the district faces a multimillion-dollar budget deficit, having already made substantial cuts, including the elimination of 111 positions earlier this summer.
