Long Island Schools Face Scrutiny for Non-Compliance with Lockdown Drill Mandates
A recent investigation by the Long Island Press has revealed that nearly half of the 124 public school districts across Nassau and Suffolk counties are not fully complying with New York State's mandate for annual lockdown drills. The state law requires schools to conduct four lockdown drills each year to prepare for potential active shooter situations. The investigation found that 31% of the districts that provided records missed multiple drills annually across several school buildings for years, while 21% were mostly compliant, and only 36% were fully compliant. Many districts denied public records requests, citing security reasons, or provided heavily redacted documents. This non-compliance comes despite the state education law making it a misdemeanor for principals who fail to hold the required drills. The issue highlights a broader concern about the effectiveness and potential trauma caused by these drills, with some lawmakers proposing to reduce their frequency.
