Mother Arrested After Four Children Found Unattended in Unsafe Home in Memphis
A Memphis, Tennessee mother, Keenia Haynes, faces four counts of child neglect after police found four of her eight children, including two unresponsive infants, left alone in a dirty home without air conditioning. Police were alerted to a child welfare concern when two toddlers, aged 2 and 3, were seen running into the street and nearly hit by a car. The toddlers led officers to their home, where no adults were present. Inside, officers discovered 2-month-old twins secured in car seats, both unresponsive. Additionally, a toddler was found attempting to drink from a bleach bottle in the kitchen. First responders arrived and fed the infants, who then became responsive. Haynes returned to the home approximately an hour later, carrying a bottle of beer, and was subsequently arrested. Four other children, aged 7 to 13, were at school during the incident. The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services has been contacted to assist with the custody and care of all eight children.
