Maine Towns Consider Temporary Bans on Data Center Development Amid Transparency Concerns
Several small towns across Maine are contemplating or enacting temporary bans on data center development. This movement follows a nationwide increase in data center construction and growing concerns regarding their environmental impact and the transparency of their planning processes. Larger communities, such as Bangor, previously implemented moratoriums this spring. The push for local bans intensified after Governor Janet Mills vetoed a proposed statewide temporary ban, which would have been the first of its kind in the nation. Municipalities are now taking individual steps to regulate these developments, with towns like Dixfield, Bethel, and Fryeburg scheduling votes or discussions on temporary prohibitions. In Ellsworth, the city council is also expected to vote on a ban, with a city councilor citing a lack of transparency in the planning process as a key driver for the local opposition.
